Botanical Description

Probably the most important species is Virola theiodora, a slender tree 25-75 ft (7.5-23 m) in height, native to the forests of the western Amazon basin.

Most, if not all, species of Virola have a copious red resin in the inner bark. The resin from a number of species is prepared as an hallucinogenic snuff or small pellets.

The Yanomami use the resin of the bark as an entheogen and also in the curare. In Colombia, the Kãkwa or Bara-Makú also use it as a shamanic entheogen, inhaled as rapés and the Nukak inhale it.The Bora, Muinane and Witoto shamans of Colombia and Peru use the resin cooked and ingested orally in pills. It is also known its use among the Krahô Indians of Brazil.
