The Chuchuwasi is a very well known plant in the Peruvian Amazon as a powerful general tonic of the organism, to prevent and cure many ailments and as a stimulant of sexual activity. It is part of several very popular preparations based on brandy, sometimes pure and sometimes combined with different crusts and roots. The uses of this plant are documented in practically all the ethnobotanical and ethnopharmacological studies of the Amazon. Different authors agree on the medicinal properties traditionally attributed to Chuchuwasi (Rengifo-Mejia, Brack Egg, Taylor, Palacios Vaccaro, ESSALUD). Among the most outstanding properties of chuchuwasi can be mentioned: anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, antirheumatic, antidiarrheal, general tonic, regulator of the female sexual cycle and aphrodisiac. It is also very frequently used to treat and prevent colds, flu and bronchitis.
According to the Information System of the Biological and Environmental Diversity of the Peruvian Amazon, “SIAMAZONIA”, the Chuchuwasi is traditionally known for its anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, toning, antispasmodic and aphrodisiac properties. It is used to treat diarrhea, stomach pains, body discomfort in general, anemia, rheumatism, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, exhaustion, cancer, malaria, colds and is very useful as a restorative after childbirth.
The whisper of the spirits of the forest:
Let’s go back a little in time and travel to the heart of traditions. In the Amazon, plants have a “physical” and a “spiritual” dimension. They are living beings able to communicate. According to the beliefs that are still told here in the jungle, all vegetables are protected by a “mother” who is at the same time spirit of the vegetable and guardian of its virtues. In the case of Chuchuwasi, his spirit comes in the form of an old dwarf who appears in dreams to teach his secrets. Directing him a prayer and offering him tobacco before taking the bark of the trunk (most used part) was an obligatory custom not to provoke the wrath of the creature and on the contrary to call his goodness and its healing power.
During the shamanic learning of the “vegetalistas”, the contact with this spiritual dimension of the plants is a very important part of the process. This is one of the objectives that is sought during the prolonged learning isolations made in the jungle, always accompanied by a rigorous diet and by the intake of a vegetable, whose spirit will teach the secrets of medicine. In this way, an agreement or alliance between the shaman’s apprentice and the plants he will take during his training is put into effect. Apart from the fact that man will stay close to the plants for use as medicine, a spiritual relationship is added that commits him to make offerings and to have a great consideration and a friendly respect.
In retribution, the spirit or “Genius” of the plant may be “called” by the shaman to help him fight an illness, a curse or a bad spirit. During the healing ceremonies, the “healers” sing “Icaros” (sacred chants used in traditional Amazonian medicine) that are called to the geniuses of various plants in order to make them participate in the healing.
A special recipe:
Chuchuwasi extract can be used to prepare an invigorating drink in the style of the Peruvian jungle. The elders macerate the bark of this tree in “brandy”, which is the alcohol obtained by the distillation of sugar cane. Today, in the villages on the banks of the numerous Amazonian rivers, it is still prepared in the local rum. It is expected some days that the alcohol is dyed the red color of the sap, mixed with a little wild honey. A cup is taken every morning when you wake up. In general this drink is also offered to neighbors who spend inviting them to drink a glass to “expel the cold from your bones …”. Its stimulating effect on male sexual potency is always the source of ridicule and jokes. But this is only one of the many means that the natives of the Amazon use to laugh! (your favorite activity)
Chuchuhuasi contains numerous plant chemicals, including triterpenes, flavonols and sesquiterpene alkaloids. However, the most commonly understood chemicals are mayteine and maytansine, which are alkaloids that have been documented to contain antitumor activity. On a side note, though Maytenus krukovii contains these compounds, they are not in high enough amounts to have therapeutic activity for cancer treatment. Two other constituents that are considered active in this plant are two triterpenes called dammarane and friedelane. Among other constituents, there is also catechin tannins and proanthocyanidins.
Chuchuhuasi also has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
