Uncaria tomentosa (popularly known in English as cat’s claw, although that name is also used for other plants; in Spanish as uña de gato or as Indian name vilcacora) is a woody vine found in the tropical jungles of South America, which derives its name from its claw-shaped thorns. It is used as an alternative medicine in the treatment of a variety of ailments. Other common names include: hawk’s claw, pot hook, and sparrowhawk nail.
The Cat’s Claw is a plant that presents between its leaves some species of spines or Cat-like protuberances with the same shape as those of the cat’s claws when they are outside. The therapeutically useful part of the plant is a lianas or vines that can reach between 20 and 30 m in length and their stems can have up to 30 cm in diameter. It is a plant that grows in the jungle of almost all of South America and grows wild at around 800 meters above sea level and in some cases, it is also cultivated.
It belongs to the family of the Rubiáceas, widely used in traditional medicine. The two most representative species are Uncaria tormentosa or Uña de gato (Wild) DC and Uncaria quianensis (Aubl.) Gmelin. Both have similar therapeutic characteristics, but the most widely used is Uncaria tormentosa or Uña de gato.
Traditionally this plant has been used (especially by the Amazonian tribes of Perú), in the form of decoctions to treat joint pains caused by rheumatic diseases, respiratory problems, ulcers, degenerative and infectious diseases. etc.
